Review: The Sea of Monsters and The Titan's Curse by Rick Riordan

Sea of Monsters click for synopsis from Goodreads

Titan's Curse click for synopsis from Goodreads

This is a double review because these books all follow the same basic pattern: Percy is at his latest school, gets kicked out, ends up at Camp Half-Blood, Percy rejoins his friends and they all set out on a quest to thwart whatever the evil Kronos has done this time to take over the world.  This may sound like I don't like these books but I do.  Very much so.  It's just that there isn't a whole lot to them because they are written for a younger audience, but that doesn't diminish them.  Oh no, I read these suckers non stop back to back.

While these books may not have enough meat for an adult brain, the adventure, the snark is adorable.  Seeing all the threads of the story as an adult makes me realize how deficit my ancient mythology knowledge is.  Also, Riordan does throw crafty things in there that me stop and say, "No way" or "That's a cool idea."  The bottom line is these are fun books, and should make children get excited about reading.
These books also have subtle lessons in them, like not picking on others who are different.  All in all these books are fun, adventurous reads, for kids of all ages.

My Ratings for both: 90/100

Both books were borrowed from the library.

Thanks Ju-Ju. when Baby Whimsy comes of age, i think she will enjoy them too. There are strong female characters in each story.
I saw the movie ;) But it did look like a series I would have fun reading

Adventure and mythology...surprised you haven't rad them already :)
Glad to see you enjoyed them. My daughter just finished and loved The Lost Hero, from another Riordan's series.

I saw that series and I'm interested, but want to finish these first. Glad she recommends that series.
I'm listening to the first one in my car right now! I'm enjoying it and of course I have to know why the kids love it so much. None of his books stay on the shelves!!

I'm not surprised. Perfect car listening :)
Your love of these books reminds me of my love for the 39 Clues series, which Riordan started.

I wanted to check out the 39 Clues, but again I don't need another series to finish. Not yet anyway :)
The snark between the characters is sometimes too much for me (maybe exacerbated with narration?) but I enjoy listening to these books. I stopped at Sea of Monsters but when I come into a break with my audio queue I'll start up again.

Yes, as the kids get older, the snarkiness grows, but I like it :)
I've read the first book in the series but have somehow failed to pick up the rest of the books. I think you have convinced me that I need to remedy this!

They would make for perfect summer reads or listening. To get you away from the daily grind.
That works for me!
This is a series I've been meaning to get to ... I think I have the first two. Hopefully one day soon if I keep saying no to review books lol

Glad you enjoyed these, I have the series in my TBR pile.
