What's Up Wednesday

What’s up Wednesday is a weekly catch up event. I discuss anything that’s on my mind, or what may be happening in my life. It’s my take on “me time”. Feel free to join along in the comments or leave a link to your What’s up Wednesday post.

This week is about blogging.  My knitting friend and I were talking about blogging.  How it can feel like a job after a while, I don't have much to say, the reasons we started our blog have changed over time, etc.  She primarily  keeps a knitting blog, whereas I keep this book blog, with some knitting from time to time (more of this in the future).  I also include some personal things.  Basically we both have been starting to feel that posting can be a bit of a pain.  It's starting to feel like a job and we don't have enough time to do the things we want to do, like read and comment on other blogs.

I have been trying to find a balance between reading for pleasure vs. review copies.  I also have the perpetual battle of getting my reviews done timely.  Timely in that, I remember what I read and how I felt.  As for reading, I have become better at being super selective in my review copies.  I am very happy for that.  I have even gone so far as to figure out my creepy reads for October.  Books I own!  YES can you believe it?!  So that part I'm good with.

As for the review thing, I feel the need to write a review for every single book I read.  I don't always write them quick enough and then I forget what the heck I wanted to say.  So, I may stop writing reviews on here for those quick and easy books, and put them on Goodreads instead.  Or, maybe just do Six Sentence Reviews like Staci does on Saturdays.  That may work.  Like a drive by.  Drive by Book reviews.  That may work too.

I am not going to stop blogging all together.  I have made too many friends I enjoy and would miss if I stopped.  I love reading blogs and getting to know you all.  But I need to blog smarter and better.  Streamline the process if you will.  My blog will always be a work in progress, and I am good with that.  I like to think of it as CQI = Continuous Quality Improvement.

So what do you all think?  Do you have these issues as well or is it just a funk I am in at the moment?
Any suggestions?

I have to agree with you that the reasons we started blogging have changed. I don't at this point feel like blogging is a job, but sometimes I don't get the time to read everything I'd like to. I can say for sure I won't stop just yet, and I love the book reviews, I've read more books not in my comfort zone in the past two years than totally in my life. So that's a good thing. It is also normal to be in a funk, looking forward to you knitting posts. That's another thing I need to start doing again.

Knitting can have its own funk too. I also agree I have expanded my reading comfort zone. become more adventurous if you will.
Jenny I totally understand where you're coming from, I was in a rut earlier in the year, where blogging was just another chore, reviews were an effort to write and it all just seemed too hard.

Fortunately I came out the other side lol, I also became super selective with review books, but still couldnt seem to find the time to read, review, blog visit and scrapbook as well as carry on with normal/everday life.

So getting a balance is a work in progress for me, I now seem to read quite a bit less, sometimes only one book a week but without the pressure of reading heaps, I get my reviews done within a week (or so lol) and I'm happier. I find that if I set up the books I'm likely to read over the month in blogger in draft then I'm more likely to put comments and thoughts in as I'm reading and then a review seems less overwhelming.

Whatever you decide to do, how often you post, what you post about, we definitely won't lose touch :)
ps. Love your CQI term

Thanks for the advice Teddy. I am trying to draft the reviews as soon as I start the book so this way I can type some notes as I go. Make it quicker.

As for CQI it is something that is done in healthcare. Quality Improvement is its own department and something I've always been interested in. I am all about periodically analyzing what you're doing and trying to make it better. Change is good!

Thanks for the support and no we will never lose touch for sure! Promise!
I love and appreciate shorty reviews. I actually prefer them to long ones. I say keep them on here but keep them brief. That always helps me feel like they are less of a chore.

Speaking of Goodreads, while I love it - I have heard of some bloggers having their reviews stolen from Goodreads. Which is why my Goodreads reviews are snid bits that lead the reader back to my blog.

So my 2 cents: Bring on the Drive-By Reviews.

Or maybe you could come up with a cutie name for your shorty reviews that has something to do with the girl reading under the tree in your header. If those are peaches, you can call it "Pit Stop".

Good luck darling.

Speaking of knitting and reading, have you ever seen this blog: http://www.stitchreadcook.com/

She combines her three loves.

Girl you are so darn creative! I would have never thought of that! THANK YOU!

I know what you mean about long reviews. Some can be quite good, but other times, I lose focus. Just give me the scoop and let me be on my way. Some one posted before about Goodreads re-posting reviews. I think there's setting you turn off and they can't do it. but thanks for that reminder too.

And last but not least, thanks for the blog. She has three dogs so I like her already :)
I don't feel like blogging is a job, I wish it could be, it's way funner than my real one.

I love the idea of Drive By Reviews. Sometimes I like to read just a short review, I have a bad tendency to sometimes skim through long ones.

I am also a skimmer at times so you're not alone Carol. I don't know if I could blog as a job, but yes it's funner than my job too :)
I always liked Staci's quick Sat. They are cool so you should try them :) I always think that I should try it too but then my reviews, well I write them quickly anyway.

How about that form you and Staci invented then?

That form Staci and I came up with does work, but then I found myself rambling for a few. I definitely need to revisit it. It may be my chatty nature too :
I starte blogging thinking it would improve my writing, but now I don't even re-read what I type before hitting publish. Now it's my grown-up time every night. Some nights I have 5 minutes sometimes an hour or so. I so enjoy your blog and hope you'll be blogging for years to come :)

Aw Stacy! You are too freaking sweet! It's readers/friends like you that make mecontinueto blog even though it's apainsometimes. I would miss you girls.
Most nights I also spend about 5 minutes, because my eyes are so tired from work. We just have to try and do the best we can.
As for the writing, I neverwantedto be a writer, but sometimes I toy with the idea. Just a thought :) Enjoy your holiday weekend.
Oh I hear ya girl. I go back and forth on this darn blogging thing too which is why I haven't posted since mid-August and my reader had 260 posts to read. My advice-keep at it when you feel like it. Those who read you will stay with you, those that don't are fly-by-night readers.

How do you like Intense debate? I like Disque on other people's blogs but can't get it to sync with Blogger. Do you have any problems with Intense? The one thing I don't care for ID is having to activiate your subscription as a commenter. Do you know if that is turn-offable?
