Take a Stand! Join the Standalong

One of my favorite and dear blogger friends is hosting a read along for The Stand by dear old Stephen King.  Now Stephen and I are friends from way back, but we had a falling out when I soon discovered you could skip big chunks of some of his novels, and not miss a beat.  Needless to say, I dropped him like a hot potato.  Recently though, I've been thinking of slightly rekindling my relationship with Stephen, especially with respect to some of his older works, namely The Stand and It.  So when Trish mentioned a read along, I was in like Flynn.  So here's the scoop:

The Stand...along Basics:

What: Readalong of The Stand by Stephen King. I'm calling it the Standalong. :)

When: June 1st through July 27th.

Where: Sign up on this post. Midway post will go up July 1st. Wrap-up post will go up July 27th.

How: However you want. Original (shorter) version, Uncut version, Audio version. Post on your blog or don't. You don't have to have a blog (but it does make it fun). Chitchat on Twitter. Think I'll be using #standalong or maybe #thestand. Input?

Why: Why not?? Ok, don't answer that. To have fun!!!

Standalong Get to Know You (if you're posting about the readalong, which I would loooourve if you did but understand if you don't, answer the questions below so we can all get to know you better and where you stand with The Stand) - from Trish but I would like to know too!

1. What makes you want to read The Stand?

It's one of those book I've always heard that one just had to read.  I have seen bits and pieces of TV movie and thought that was pretty good.  It's a doorstopper of a book, so this read along will give me the push I need to read this tome.

2. Describe your preconceived notions of The Stand.

It's about the ultimate battle of good vs evil.

3. What was the last scary(ish) book you read or movie you saw?

Book... escaping me right now, but I know there have been a few.  Movie....Saw, Hostel, family movies like that.

4. Which version of the book will you be reading from?

Complete and uncut at 1141 pages (OMG)

5. What are you previous experiences with Stephen King?

Started out well, but then he just disappointed me.  See intro paragraph above.

6. Anything else you'd like to add (bonus points for being extra random).

I hope this book is compelling reading, and that I enjoy the story.  Whether it scares me or not, I just want a good story.  Please Stephen!  Make it happen!

So what say you?  Are in and taking a Stand???  Hope to see you there.

I'm an old fan of Stephen King and I haven't read The Stand since my early 20's *cough* many years ago. I'd love to read it again, don't really remember much but according to goodreads I thought highly of it LOL. Just not sure I can squeeze a chunkster into my reading schedule. hmmm decisions, decisions :)

The chunkster part isintimidating...I already have a chunkster going and theyusuallytake soooo long to get through. But I will read and carry on, whether I like it or not. I have high hopes though. LOL on thecoughing:)
Oh Jenn--I have the biggest smile on my face right now. Love this post and thanks for putting this up so quickly! ;) I haven't seen Saw or Hostel. I'm trying to think of the last scary movie I saw--Black Swan definitely gave me nightmares (like graphic ones).

I hope that Mr. King doesn't let you down!! I have heard amazing things about this.

Absolutely! How could I not. And to be honest I needed the push to post something. It's been too long for me. Looking forward to it and think we will have a grand time :)
I'm joining in too! I'm still trying to decide between the two versions. I'm not a huge King fan, but people keep telling me I have to read this. Some swear by the original version and others by the uncut, I'm just not sure.

Yea for joining in !!!! :)
I say whatever edition you can get your hands on will work. Go to the bookstore and do a coin flip since it seems the consensus is split. I gave up on King years ago, but am giving him a limited re-try.
If I had this on my shelf I would be tempted, but I don't so I can breathe a sigh of relief. I do not know how people with babies/toddlers (TRISH!) get any reading done. I spend most of my day (let's say 85%) chasing, reading, cleaning up after, feeding, bathing, and who knows what else with Gage.
I have heard really good things about The Stand so I look forward to seeing what you all think.

I don't know how any of you magnificent moms get anythingdone. I have no children and still have no time. If I had kids they would be wandering around half dressed and partially hungry. Not too hungry since they ate the crackers they found in my purse.
You get much more accomplished than me my friend. You're an inspiration!

I hope I can get through the Stand. Even if I don't like it, I'm going to stick with it anyway. It will be my thing or whatever you call it.
I found me a copy of The Stand today, so I'm in. I'm not read King at all, so he better not disappoint.

Yea! So glad you're joining the party. Well I hope King lives up to the hype for you. I know he has big standards to fill :) Enjoy your weekend Irene.
I'm going for the uncut version as well! So excited. I love Stephen King so I'll happily fit more of his works into my reading schedule.
I have not yet read anything by Stephen King. I am looking forward trying one with the group.
